MUMS
Inpatients at St. Olav's hospital; malnutrition and oral health - how is the situation?
Background
Nutritional status, food intake and oral health can have major implications for overall health, especially for patients who are hospitalized for various reasons. We know that there is a connection between what we eat and our oral health, but we do not know to what extent challenges related to nutrition and oral health overlap in patients. The practice in hospitals is that patients are screened for nutritional risk, but there is no practice for mapping oral health.
Purpose
We want to map the relationship between nutritional risk and oral health in inpatients at St. Olavs Hospital to see if these overlap and if there are any risk factors that stand out for systematic follow-up.
Methods
In the MUMS (Mouth, Malnutrition, Food and Saliva) study, we have mapped nutritional risk and oral health among adult inpatients at St. Olavs Hospital. Nutritional risk and oral health were mapped using clinical examination and questionnaire. In total, 118 patients from 18 bed posts (15 somatic, 3 psychiatric) were included.
