Background

Dental health is an important part of public health and most of us regularly go to the dentist for check-ups. Every year, therefore, a significant number of X-rays are taken which, together with the clinical examination, give the dentist a good picture of our oral health and how it is developing. However, the assessment of radiographs is subjective, it is experiential and not standardized.

Artificial intelligence (AI) are innovative systems that are increasingly used as decision support in complex and unclear issues, and in large amounts of data. AI is central to precision medicine where treatment based on specific information about each patient is available. An automated tool based on artificial intelligence will be able to extract a lot of information. Such a tool will thus be able to support the dentist's assessments and make it easier to detect and grade disease development in the oral cavity at an early stage, before symptoms are visible to the naked eye.

Purpose

Using artificial intelligence and automated image processing offer decision support for dentists.

Methods

We use dental x-ray from HUNT4 Dental Health as a dataset for the development of algorithms both in training, prediction and validation.
